In a post-game press conference following his team’s win, – Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Brady Quinn had this to say concerning his teammate, Javon Belcher, who shot himself in the head in front of his head coach and GM yesterday after murdering his girlfriend.
When you ask someone how they are doing, do you really mean it? When you answer someone back how you are doing, are you really telling the truth? We live in a society of social networks, with Twitter pages and Facebook, and that’s fine, but we have contact with our work associates, our family, our friends, and it seems like half the time we are more preoccupied with our phone and other things going on instead of the actual relationships that we have right in front of us. Hopefully people can learn from this and try to actually help if someone is battling something deeper on the inside than what they are revealing on a day-to-day basis.
Never forget to care about those people around you. Check-in with one another and be there for each other. It is horribly tragic that something like this could happen, especially that such abhorrent and appalling actions could be taken by a young man who seemed to be such a bright shining star with so much to offer the world. I know people like to characterize professional athletes as overpaid thugs who commit all sorts of violence, but Mr. Belcher had a degree from the University of Maine in child development and family relations. So tragic. Everyone be safe.
